General Information

Work on this deepwater harbour began with the reclamation of five acres of waterfront which was infilled with 200,000 cu. yds. of material excavated from an on-shore borrow pit. Over 300,000 cu. yds. of rock for armouring was quarried locally at a site 700 ft. above sea level.

All the equipment used in the excavation, haulage and handling of this material had to be imported. This included a fleet of twelve 25-ton off-highway Terex trucks, three CAT dozers (D7's and D8's), three CAT 966 and two CAT 988 front end loaders, two drill tracks and five 600 cfm compressors. Two 15-ton electric derrick cranes with 140 ft. radius reach placed the armouring rock, the largest boulders for the outer layer weighing up to 15 tons. Two NCK Andes handled the 80 ft. long sheet piles which form the docking face. Work included the laying of underground services, 2,500 ft. of new rail track from the sugar warehouse and the installation of a 3,000 ft. long molasses pump line.
